May 23rd 2015 Premier Firearms Sale
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/22/2015
This 1911 lightweight Commander was manufactured in 1954. Standard features include a 3" barrel, semi-automatic, and chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It has been beautifully engraved in a scroll and cattle-brand motif and nickel plated with ruby eye carved steer head ivory grips. It has a lightened trigger. Barrel is stamped "Colt .45 Auto". The engraving is signed D.W. Harris on right side of frame. Harris uses handmade tools to make elaborate engravings on firearms. Using the same style tools that have been in use for over 300 years, Harris elevates an ordinary firearm into the sphere of fine art. Some of the themes include: inside gripstrap is "XIT" and "UP"; right side of slide has a dollar sign, a machine part, and four "6's"; there is a "101" on the left side of slide as well as "SOB"; top of slide has an "8", a "22P" and a cursive "M", backstrap has "101" and a cross. All the stampings are as sharp as they left the factory. Has a mint bore and action. One of the most handsomely engraved lightweight Commanders this writer has ever seen, an absolute work of art.
