Smoothbore steel barrel dated 1839 on left side of breech and stamped with Belgian proof marks. Secured with two brass barrel bands; the front band with integral blade sight, rear sight mounted on barrel tang. Flat flintlock mechanism with rounded tail and stamped in center "PJMALHERBE / A LIEGE". Pan stamped with small proof mark and another is in front of reinforced cock. Brass German Potsdam style furniture, most parts with crown over "K" making or small numbers. Steel buttplate. Plain stock with cut-out cheek piece. Very good condition; barrel and lock retain a spotted grey patina. Brass retains a mellowing patina. Stock very good with some scattered marks from use, wormholes on the buttstock and one small sliver of wood replaced on the left side of forend. Some shrinkage around lock with a gap at the bottom. Possibly one of the arms shipped to the Confederacy for use in the Civil War, or a musket made in Belgium for a German contract.
