The Model 1766 Charleville musket was one of the primary arms used by French and American Forces during the Revolutionary War. Some of the small alterations seen on this musket denote probable American use. Left side of the wrist has been altered for comfort of the hand and the left side of the buttstock has an incised cross composed of two thin rectangles. The frizzen has been relined from heavy use, and the top jaw and jaw screw were replaced during the period of use. Round, smoothbore iron barrel stamped with Charleville "D" on left side of breech and mounted on top near muzzle with bayonet lug. Flat lockplate shows traces of Charleville marking in center. Iron furniture is standard French Model 1766 and the full length plain walnut stock is of French form. Steel ramrod is a contemporary replacement. CONDITION: Good to very good. The musket appears to be in untouched condition. All iron components retain a dark, heavy patina. Lock functions well and appears to be in original flintlock configuration. The barrel has been shortened during the period of use by about 11/16". Stock shows scattered marks from use with some edge wear and minor chips around lock. This is a very nice example of a musket that almost certainly saw use in the American Revolution.
