This is a very early custom Weatherby's using the FN Mauser action. The barrel is stamped "220 Rocket" on left side and "Chrome Bore" on right side (not stamped made in Germany, as barrels were made stateside). Frame is simply stamped "Weatherby South Gate, Calif.". Features high polish royal blue barrel and frame, factory drilled and tapped for scope on bridge, polished bolt, Weatherby Monte Carlo stock with finely cut hand checkering, rosewood forend tip and grip cap with white diamond, black waffle buttpad and sling eyes. Trigger guard and floorpate are finished in a French satin nickel with fine engraving by Belgian master engraver Paul Dubois and featuring a horned antelope. Stock has the inlaid diamonds on both sides of three contrasting exotic woods (stock inlay pattern No. 2). Right side of stock has the pattern No. 30 running gazelle which was $250 extra by itself in the 1967 catalog. The 1961 catalog shows that they had already switched over to the J.P. Sauer action, which means that this rifle was made in the mid-to-late 1950's. The .220 Rocket caliber was one of the hottest small caliber centerfire cartridge in its day. Manufactured with no sights. Near mint and out with a couple of minor storage marks on barrel. An extremely handsome, early custom bolt action Weatherby.
