One of the most popular and durable side arms used during the Civil War. Features full octagon barrel, solid frame, six shot percussion, single action with standard blue finish, brass trigger guard and two piece walnut grips. Barrel has a sharp three line address with pinched front sight, 30% original factory blue, and laser sharp legends with military inspector stamp "C". Loading lever is stamped "H" and is basically a brown patina. Right side of frame retains 10% original blue with "L" stamp; left side of frame is stamped "B" and has traces of blue. Cylinder is brown patina with an "L" stamp. Walnut grips are very good with a few light marks and a cartouche in box on left panel says "BH" for Benjamin Hannis; a noted inspector of Remington New Army revolvers. Indexes and locks up like new with a strong, clean, rifled bore. Includes an original period leather flap holster in very good to excellent condition. Additional information: the left grip panel has a light and crudely carved "TM" which is attributed to Tom Morrison of the 18th Virginia Calvary. The revolver was on the estate of James Tiddles. It was sold at auction in Virginia May 19th, 1947 and is signed by a relative, Batty Morrison. Tom Morrison is listed as a corporal who enlisted in 1862 in West Virginia and was a member of the 18th Cavalry Company F. Tom Morrison lived on a farm near Bethel Church on Route 50 (currently). There is a copy of the Morrison Estate auction flyer. He fought at the third battle of Winchester, as well as the battles on New Market, Lynchburg, Harper's Ferry and Front Royal; and was wounded in action. In addition, this lot comes with a book titled "The 18th Virginia Cavalry" of which Tom is listed and a tin type of Tom Morrison with his Civil War kepi at his side. This Confederate Cavalry was formed in 1862. From 1863 to 1865 the regiment saw almost constant action. This is a wonderful Confederate ID’ed revolver and holster with family history in excellent condition for having seen so much action during the war.
