This sword is in the general style of an 1860 Ames Cavalry saber and is similar to those made by Griswold or Haiman & Bros. It features a curved steel blade with partial shallow fullers on both sides and a brass hilt with two branch guard and roughly cast front face, marked with Roman numeral "VIII". The wooden grip is wrapped with black leather and a single strand of copper wire. The steel scabbard has a steel drag with brass ring mounts, iron rings and a brass throat mount. CONDITION: Good to very good. Blade shows some edge wear and retains a grey patina with scattered areas of dark staining. The hilt retains an unpolished patina with some minor casting flaws and marks from use. The grip retains about 70% of its original leather with some losses. Scabbard is very good, retaining a dark patina overall and some shallow denting. This is a very honest, Southern made Civil War Cavalry saber.
