Of larger than normally encountered size measuring 29" across prod and 45" from stirrup to rear of windlass. Wrapped string and windlass cord appear original. Simple bow straps with fluted decorated nosepiece. Inlaid with staghorn and mother of pearl geometrics and lining. Faceted and turned trigger, that projects out to right side. Bone nut retained by pierced plaques. Spiral fluted windlass cranks. Small cheekpiece on right side. Accompanied by a diamond headed quarrel with hand forged point and wings replaced by a soft wood; red number "96-102A" on shaft indicates possible museum display. CONDITION: Very good, and very pleasing. Channel staghorn is missing approximately 3/4 of its length and one other inlay is missing behind nut. Some lining lifted. Metal has acquired a lovely patina throughout with flashes of dove grey. Nosepiece with some minor chipping. Wood is very good with a few bumps and bruises and a couple of minor cracks that appear to be stable; additional layer of varnish applied at one point with a noticeable drip on left side. Windlass appears to operate properly, but has not been completely retracted to avoid accidental breakage. Quarrel is very good with metal patinaed and some normal bumps and bruises to wood. This is a really nice example of one of the rarer crossbow forms. EW
