Colt Model 1861 Special percussion contract rifle musket dated 1863. 39 - 1/2" round barrel in .62 caliber smoothbore with replaced rear leaf sight and blade front. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 3 barrel band configuration with iron nosecap and US marked military buttplate. Dated 1863 on lockplate and on barrel near breech with barrel being marked with VP Eagle proof, "F.E.M. STEEL" inspector mark, and is hand stamped "A.C. YOUNG." / "CO. E. 3. PA. ART." Abraham C. Young was born in 1835 and in February of 1864 he enlisted and was assigned to Company A, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. The 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery was active in several battles including the Siege of Plymouth, North Carolina, Petersburg, Richmond, and the Appomatox Campaign. While Abraham was serving, a detachment of Company A was in action at the Siege of Plymouth, North Carolina from April 17-20, 1864 aboard the gunboat Bombshell. This rifle musket is complete with bayonet as well as several copies of the enlistment records of Abraham Young from the National Archives. CONDITION: Good, with iron turned a brown-gray patina with light pitting throughout and evidence of front and rear sights being replacements. Stock is very good as cleaned at one point but no major cracks. Mechanically fine. Bore is bright and smooth as converted to .62 smoothbore from .58 caliber rifled. Bayonet is very good with storage marks throughout. TON
