A substantial number of Merrill carbines were purchased for cavalry service during the Civil War and are known to have been carried by the 1st Delaware; 7th Indiana; 27th Kentucky; 1st New Jersey; 1st, 15th, and 18th New York; 11th, 17th, and 18th Pennsylvania; and 1st and 3rd Wisconsin. Classic configuration with 22 - 1/8" round barrel, blade front sight, and 3-leaf rear. Monkey tail type breech loading action with knurled latch. Walnut carbine length stock marked on the left with a partially legible cartouche. Standard brass mounts including patch box. Also affixed with steel saddle ring and bar. CONDITION: Barrel displays an older applied brown finish fading to patina with some freckling. Action exhibits a silvery patina. Mounts have been polished bright and are starting to mellow. Stock has been cleaned with small scattered filled repairs and dings. Fine, bright bore with some mild cleaned oxidation spots. Fine mechanics.
