Standard 1842 pistol configuration. Brass mounted. This gun is well marked on the lock with "PALMETTO. ARMORY./ S*C." surrounding a "spiral tree" with the lowest frond touching the trunk on the right side. Early production with a sharper Palmetto tree, before the stamp was worn out. Marked "COLUMBIA/ S C. 1852" at the tail of the lock. The barrel is dated 1853, as it should be, "P/ V" and a Palmetto tree. Also marked "Wm.GLAZE&CO." on the left side of the barrel. "JMW" lightly carved into the left side of the stock opposite the lock. No evidence of having had a cartouche or sub-inspectors marks on brass parts. Accompanying this gun is a letter dated 1985 from noted Confederate expert and collector Frederick R. Edmunds stating that this is indeed a correct and original gun. CONDITION: Gun remains in attic condition, showing evidence of having been lightly cleaned many years ago with clear markings and some light surface rust and minor pitting. Brass has a pleasing mellow color to it. Wood shows wear as well as signs of having been lightly cleaned many years ago. Slight crack at front of lock plate in stock. Bolster to lock plate fit is tight. Fine mechanical function. This is a very solid example of a much sought after Palmetto pistol which undoubtedly saw use in the hands of South Carolina Confederate troops during the Civil War. GR
