In late 1915, Indian introduced Charles Gustafson’s replacement for Oscar Hedstrom’s 61 cu in V-Twin engine. The new engine used side valves instead of the inlet-over-exhaust valve outlets used in the Hedstrom design. The flathead engine was quieter and less expensive to maintain as well as easier to manufacture.The might engine drove through a three-speed, hand-changed gearbox with foot operated clutch and all-chain drive.
