Unsigned circa nineteenth century oil on canvas portrait of George Washington depicted in his Continental uniform in faux painted wood roundel after Rembrandt Peale. Rembrandt Peale (Pennsylvania, 1778-1860) painted Washington live at 18 years old, copying the portrait 79 times throughout his life, painting his last Washington in 1859. This portrait is framed in an attractive painted gesso frame with paper tag reverse noting the painting was relined and restored in 1931 by Hannah Horner. Field: 17 - 1/4 x 20 - 13/16". Overall: 25 x 29" CONDITION: Very good with craquelure surface with some minor inpainting. Frame has some chips and minor splits, remaining sturdy and serviceable. Overall the portrait presents very well. BAS
