Helmets of this form are typically Italian, circa the last quarter of the 15th century, and are famous as many of them were repurposed for parade use during the 19th century, leading to the term "Sallet alla Veneziana" (trans: Sallet in the Venetian style). This example is of typical form, with the skull made as one piece and a medial ridge, with an open face. The interior with excellent texture from the hammer, while a significant amount of the neck guard has been replaced, mostly on the wings, with a visible weld line on the interior that has been reasonably well concealed on the exterior. Mounted on a contemporary wooden stand. Accompanied by a folder of information when Dr. John Lattimer was in possession of this helmet, including an invoice from Christie, Manson & Woods, when Dr. Lattimer purchased the helmet out of their July 5th, 1978 Arms and Armor sale, some photos of Dr. Lattimer wearing the helmet, and insurance information when it was being imported; front of folder reads "Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain Columbus' Sponsors". CONDITION: Metal components are a base gunmetal grey with scattered areas of old inactive oxidation and oil staining, with excellent delamination throughout that speaks to the great age of this piece. 1 strike to the medial ridge that does not detract. Interior has had lacquer blacking at one point, with evidence still visible towards rear. Added areas of neck protection are contemporary metal but present well. PROVENANCE: Ex. Dr. John Lattimer collection. A good example.
