EXTREMELY RARE ROBB HEROIC SIZE 19TH CENTURY CARVED AND PAINTED CIGAR STORE INDIAN TRADE FIGURE

Circa 1870–1890, New York, attributed to the shop of Samuel A. Robb, substantial carved and polychrome-painted wood tobacconist trade figure depicting a standing Native American warrior wearing an elaborate eagle and feather headdress, carved jewelry and feather-decorated costume, the raised right arm displaying a bundle of cigars and the left supporting a large circular advertising shield lettered “SUPERIOR QUALITY CIGARS.” Particularly elaborate construction includes deeply carved hair, applied feather elements and a fully modeled animal pelt descending across the back with carved head, paws and claws. Mounted on a shaped ground above a later black-painted box pedestal. CONDITION: Figure retains an attractive old painted surface with evidence of restoration and overpainting, scattered age cracks, minor losses and general wear consistent with age; advertising shield with a substantial old repair and replaced section, together with scattered wear and surface loss. Overall structurally sound and displays exceptionally well. Provenance: The Mystic Seaport Museum.
