4 gauge, 31" overall. 24" barrel marked "MAN'D BY" "STRONG FIRE ARMS" "CO" and with 1883 patent dates, eagle, and New Haven address on heavy pivoting breech section. Breech has hooked steel sliding cartridge extractor. Barrel is fitted with removable steel adapter for ten gauge blanks which are readily available. Usual high quality varnished mahogany carriage has two front 6" diameter lignum vitae wheels with leather "tires". Brass hardware including assembly bolts, trunnion covers, yoke type restraining line fittings, and capstan elevation screw, are nicely finished. CONDITION: Very fine, original, as found. Barrel is a fine mustard brown patina. Breech section of slightly different alloy is toned a bit darker. Deeply stamped breech markings (unusual as most are fairly light). Firing mechanism appears to be in fine condition. Extractor moves freely. Carriage retains most of what appears to be its original varnish with considerable alligatored attic burn. Brass furniture also nicely toned. Wheels have some old, possibly original, infill in stress cracks, right wheel has old repairs. An exceptionally fine example of this highly sought after signal cannon. MGM48.
