Serial No. 4105. Barrel length is 31 ½ inches. British sporting percussion breech-loading rifle, Calisher & Terry, cal. .52 in. Breech mechanism is a hinged turn bolt for loading with paper cartridge, lightly engraved with foliate scrolls. Steel lock and hammer on R.H. side, lightly engraved with foliate scrolls, steel oval trigger guard with small front spur, no sideplate, both sling swivels are present, half-stocked with horn forend and checkering at wrist and forend. Bedded blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards, barrel fastened to stock via single barrel key. This features a full octagon steel barrel. Has engraving on trigger guard. The rear spur is finely checkered. Walnut stock with piano finish. Full octagon barrel is a lovely soft blue patina. Barrel legends readable but faint and some light engraving at breech. The frame and receiver parts are a gray smooth brown patina with some age freckling. The top of the hammer is engraved like a fish and has the original nipple. The side plate is stamped Calisher & Terry London. The top of the frame is stamped Terry’s Patent 40 Bore. The checkering is nearly sharp as new. There are no cracks anywhere and the wood to metal fit is flawless. The highly finished stock retains the majority of the original finish with some minor age bruises especially at the lower butt. The bore is near mint. This was an amazing action at the time it was produced in the mid 19th century and the action was highly regarded world wide. The military version of this rifle was personally owned by General Stonewall Jackson. A quality high condition single shot sporting rifle seldom seen this side of the pond.
