The 3rd generation Camaro was released for sale in December 1981. The 1982 model introduced the first Camaros with a hatch back body style. The Camaro Z-28 was Motor Trend magazine’s Car of the year in 1982.The Z-28 came standard with the 5.0 liter 4-bbl V8 or optional LU5 twin TBI “Cross Fire Injection” 5.0 liter engines. The optional HO motor produced 20 more hp at 165 than the 4-bbl version. The Z-28 included lightweight fiberglass hoods with functional air induction.
