Colt Factory records on serial No. 16864 were lost, but a record does exist with this serial number shipped to the commanding officer of the Springfield Armory January 29th, 1902. It has been returned to the factory for a cleaning, repair and refinishing. As usual, parts are mismatched. Trigger guard number is "34302", backstrap "771". It was subsequently refinished and all barrel markings removed, including the number under the ejector rod. Cylinder number removed. Early features include donut ejector, screw-in black powder frame, case colored frame and hammer, balance blued, one piece varnished walnut grips (no visible cartouche). Frame dates to 1875 with no visible inspector marks present. Left side of frame is stamped “U.S.” with the two line patent address (top line faint). All metal retains 99% of the reapplied finish. Period style refinish overzealous when polishing markings. Indexes perfectly. Strong rifling. Very handsome U.S. Artillery revolver.
