Two-stage caliber smoothbore barrel, signed in script on top flat “M. Jacob.” Flat flintlock lockplate is unmarked. Brass four-piece patchbox, Lancaster Co. style with stylized bird at top finial, no engraving and fastened by screws. Lid opens with unusual button on front of patchbox, above lid. Brass furniture . Plain full-length walnut stock, relief carved borders terminating in a teardrop surround lock and sideplate, beavertail around barrel tang. Incise-carved scroll with florals behind cheekpiece, on left side of buttstock. Very Good condition. Barrel retains dark brown patina, some heavy pitting near breech. Lock professionally reconverted, now retains brown patina with some light areas. Brass furniture retains a mellow patina and some scattered marks from use. Stock good, buttstock has been broken through center of comb and repaired. A few splinters replaced along forend and a small chip replaced above front of lock. Scattered dents and scratches on stock from use. Michael Jacobs was a York County, Pa. maker, listed in the Warrington Township Census in 1807. He is a scarce maker, only a few examples made by him exist. This is an attractive example of a Golden Age rifle.
