Approximately 36,000 Sharps New Model 1859 carbines were manufactured during the Civil War. This example is standard in all respects. The barrel has the Hartford address and is stamped “New Model 1859”. The Lawrence folding ladder rear sight has 1859 patent date. Right sideplate has 1852 and 1859 patent dates. Left side of frame has the 1848 patent date. Left side of barrel has the “S.L.” inspector stamp. Features a two piece walnut stock and single barrel band. Stock cartouche no longer readable. Right side of stock has the standard patchbox. Right side is stamped “B. Poll” for previous owner. All legends are sharp. All metal surfaces are a soft patina. Left side has the original saddle ring and bar. Stock is very good with usual war dings. Left side of forearm has a 2” repaired crack, but is otherwise very good. Strong rifled bore with minor abrasion. Some investigation as to who B. Poll was might add some significant interest and value. A fine, all original, as found Sharps Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine.
