Part round part octagonal loading lever mounted below, six shot percussion cylinder stamped with patent dates, twelve stop cylinder, engraved with oval panels surrounded by foliage and florals. Steel frame, brass gripstraps and triggerguard and varnished walnut grips. Good condition, retains a dark gray patina overall with light pitting, barrel markings are excellent, wedge screw replaced, cylinder engraving shows some wear, brass gripstraps unpolished, grips very good with scatter marks from use and missing most of original varnish. Barrel has about 1" crack on left flat. Pistol is accompanied by a letter regarding the history of this gun and how it was passed down through the family of Alexander Watkins Terrell of the First Texas Cavalry Regiment. He became commander of what came to be called "Terrell's Texas Cavalry" which was the 37th and 34th Regiments. From 1893 until 1897 he was named minister to Turkey under US President Grover Cleveland's second administration. Included is a letter about this gun and how it came to the hands of the current owner, an article about Manhattan Navy Percussion Pistol identification, uni history of the 37th Texas Calvary Regiment, an article on Brigadier General Alexander Terrell and several biographies of Terrell.
