Octagonal barrel signed lightly “Henry Leman” in script on top flat. Four inch zig-zag patterns engraved on each side of rear sight. Original flint lock with waterproof pan, marked “Blanch” in center. Brass furniture. Double set triggers. Ornate pierced brass four-piece patchbox, finely and extensively engraved; pierced brass toeplate engraved en suite with patchbox. Unusual ramrod ferrules 3-1/4’ each in length, faceted with rings at each end and in center. Nosecap has repeating pattern of double lines, similar to Melchior Fordney’s work, as Leman apprenticed under him. Two-piece brass sideplate with rear lockscrew escutcheon featuring a patriotic eagle finely engraved, front screw escutcheon in the shape of foliage and appropriately engraved. Large engraved silver eagle inlaid above cheeckpiece on left side of buttstock and large brass barrel keys with large silver escutcheons and wrist escutcheon, all rocker panel engraved. Full length tiger maple stock of typical 1820’s Lancaster County, Pa. form. Flowing scrolls incise-carved into left side of buttstock. Checkered wrist and fore-end. Very good condition, barrel has been cleaned, light markings and engraving. Front sight replaced. Lock retains grey patina, original flint configuration. Brass has been cleaned and is not mellowing, engraving shows some wear. A few small repairs and cracks along fore-end and checkering shows heavy wear. Rope burned, period ramrod. Scattered marks from use.
