Round bright steel barrel marked on left side near breech “N.J.” and “V/P” over eagle’s head proofmark. Dated on top “1863.” Flat percussion lockplate with beveled edges, dated 1863 at the tail with a large eagle over “U.S.” stamped in center and “SAVAGE R.F.A. Co./MIDDLETON, Ct.” Adjustable flip-up rear sight and front sight integral with bayonet lug. Typical Model 1863 furniture. Plain walnut stock with “N.J.” stamped opposite lock. Steel ramrod. Very good condition. All steel components have been cleaned and are now bright steel. Some pitting on bands, eagle on lock stamped lightly, all other markings excellent. Stock very good, as sanded and refinished, edges soft on raised panels around lock and opposite lock. Savage made 25, 520 of the Model 1861 muskets.
