Octagonal smoothbore barrel signed “JA” in script on top flat near breech. John Amos was a Bedford County, Pa. maker who worked between 1832 and 1864. Flat lockplate stamped “NORRIS” features a hammer of classic Bedford form and double set triggers. Brass furniture, four piece pierced patchbox, finely engraved with scrolls on lid, shaded borders and flowers around screws. Full sideplate engraved en suite, long nosecap of familiar form. Four silver inlays including large oval with detailed engraved border located above cheeckpiece, two inlays in teardrop carving around lock and sideplate, and an oval wrist escutcheon. Full length figured maple stock, carved with finely executed incised scrolls on left side of buttstock and relief carving terminating in teardrops around lock and sideplate. Good, as found condition. This rifle is completely uncleaned, barrel retains a brown patina with some light surface rust and heavy pitting around breech and bolster, signature worn. Lock needs repair, retains dark patina with areas of light rust. Brass is unpolished with excellent engraving. Stock has some splinters missing along both sides of fore-end, losses above front lock tang and hammer, and a corner missing at toe. Toeplate missing. There is a gap below lock from the mainspring pressure and has an old repair using sheet iron and screws on underside next to triggerguard. The carving is excellent and shows little wear. Some small losses to wood around sideplate, sideplate broken into two pieces. Scattered marks from use.
