Octagonal smoothbore barrel. Stamp engraved percussion lock stamped “JOSH GOLCHER” replaced during the period of use and space in front of and behind lock filled with leather. Brass furniture. Four-piece engraved patchbox with daisy finial. Brass Moravian eight-pointed star inlaid into left side of buttstock above the cheekpiece, vacant brass oval wrist escutcheon and tombstone-shaped toeplate. Full brass sideplate with a few screws added for reinforcement. Full-length figured maple stock in the typical Womelsdorf School of gunsmithing style. Relief and incised scrolls carved on each side of wrist. Raised panels around lock and sideplate are relief carved and terminate at the rear in a tear drop. Incised scrolls carved around entry ferrule. Relief scrolls around a shell carved around barrel tang, similar to the work of Christian Beck and Leonard Reedy. Large relief scrolls intertwined around a checkered panel behind cheekpiece on left side of buttstock. Relief checkering in the shape of a triangle directly beneath cheekpiece, finely executed relief scrolls forward of wrist. Untouched, dry, in as found condition. This rifle was recently found in an attic in a home in Eastern Pennsylvania, near Eastern, Pa. Barrel retains a dark brown patina with some light surface rust and pitting around the breech and bolster. Lock replaced in period, retains dark patina, some pitting and some orange surface rust. Brass furniture retains a very dark patina. Front finial of triggerguard is reinforced by a small period repair using a piece of brass fastened by two screws. Sideplate had two additional screws added during period of use in order to secure a break in stock. Stock very good, dry and original finish, some losses of finish from staining or bleaching, scattered marks from use and horizontal crack in forend near muzzle. Brass nosecap with separating brass on face. A scarce gun in untouched condition.
