Octagonal barrel with tang extended during the period of use. Flat converted percussion lockplate engraved and marked “ASHMORE/WARRANTED” in the center. Four-piece pierced brass patchbox featuring an engraved eagle’s head and body on the finial and body, feather design on lid and sides along with engraved borders. Brass furniture missing eight-pointed star above cheekpiece, four barrel key escutcheons on each side of the forend and oval wrist escutcheon, pins still present. Cutout tulip design on toeplate. Two brass plates surround triggerguard, beneath lock cavity added with five screws on each side for reinforcement. Hand forged iron sideplate replaced during the period of use. Figured full-length maple stock of Berks County, Pa. form. Finely incise-carved on left side of buttstock with overlapping “C” scrolls with checkered panels in overlapping portions. Also carved forward of cheekpiece with a similar design and around top of comb. Ramrod is missing. Good condition, in as found condition and uncleaned, this rifle recently came directly from an Eastern Pennsylvania attic. Barrel and lock retain a dark brown patina, heavy pitting around breech and bolster, some pitting on lockplate, as well. Stock good, some slivers of wood missing along forend on right side, period area of replaced wood above rear tang of lock extending to breech. Period repair on underside, beneath lock, using brass plates fastened with screws. Bottom of forend worn extensively, completely through in one small area, exposing ramrod channel. Front triggerguard tang broken and missing forward of bow. Extended tang covers a break on top of wrist, traces of carving can be seen.
