Rifled octagon barrel; unmarked flintlock action. Both sides of forend inlaid with silver rattlesnakes and three arrows; vacant silver oval wrist escutcheon. Large round oval inlay above cheekpiece displays engraved folky patriotic eagle and shield, and below the cheekpiece is a large silver inlay with an engraved rattlesnake. Four piece brass patchbox of typical Berks County style. Finial is engraved with 'C' scrolls and the lid shows a swooping hawk preying on a curled rattlesnake. Full length figured maple stock with incised carved scrolls around ramrod entry furl; wooden ramrod. Good condition; barrel retains an even brown patina with some areas of light pitting around the rear sight and muzzle and some edge wear. Lock has been reconverted from percussion to flintlock with some areas showing white metal and some contemporary parts. Brass retains an unpolished patina with some dark areas and some areas of highlights. Sideplate has been replaced and shows an applied brown finish. Silver inlays retain an old coat of varnish. Replaced ramrod is about 2" short. Stock is good as refinished with some major losses to left side of buttstock around buttplate, some chipping around sideplate and barrel tang, slivers of replaced wood around lockplate and in a few areas along both sides fo the forend; and a few scattered marks from use.
