Offered is a five shot, double action takedown revolver of Merwin design, factory nickel plated with full coverage engraving, pearl two piece grips with scull crusher butt bird's head design. Referred to as the Pocket Model, this example is with the longest available barrel length. Cylinder has scooped flutes. The engraving is the typical punch-dot design with swan panel on left side. The bird's head model is much scarcer than the saw-handle model. Features the sliding loading gate with trigger guard. This model was introduced in 1876, a nearly identically engraved gun can be found on page 88 in "The Story of Merwin Hulbert & Co. Firearms" by Art Phelps, first edition 1991. In addition to the engraving, this revolver features the gold wash cylinder; the right side of the frame still retains the desirable red and green enamel. Revolver functions perfectly in double action abut does not stay back single action. Cylinder retains approximately 60% of the original gold wash, especially in flutes. Pearl grips are excellent. Frame retains approximately 90% original factory nickel finish. Barrel retains approximately 75-80% original nickel blending with gun metal grey patina. Tight lock-up. Beautiful factory engraved 19th century Merwin.
