Handpainted tin, made by Louis Marx Company. Toy design shop took a 1920s German made litho tin Harold Lloyd wind-up toy and adapted it to their licensed Edgar Bergen character. The oversized shoes and the side-to-side action became a Louis Marx standard used frequently in subsequent years but Charlie was the first. The prototype has the moving mouth used on the Marx production toy but also a cane that was left off. The prototype has a hand-painted date on the bottom 2-4-38 and code number 1614 & ERIE which would be Erie, PA, home of the Marx toy factory. See ATW Spotlight article Aug. 2009 p. 64. Provenance: Collection of Carl Lobel.
