Composition and cloth dressed wind-up. Chaplin appeared as a soldier in more than one movie, the earliest being released in 1914. He wears an olive drab/brown cloth uniform with brass buttons. Toy has what appears to be an actual clock mechanism with the fixed key saying Waterbury Clock Company. The impressive size and mechanism as well as the rollers concealed in his sheet metal shoe give this toy the appearance of an Ives Walking Toy and it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Ives Walking General Butler made in 1885. Ives toys were made in Connecticut, not too far from the Waterbury Clock factory. The Chaplin walker is always found in very rough condition. The NY Doll Hospital restored this one more than 25 years ago. The clothes and mechanism are 100% original. Provenance: Collection of Carl Lobel.
Condition: (Restored).
Item Dimensions: 12" T.
