Both of iron with hand-forged conical sockets for hafts. Both are toggle harpoons and probably date to the mid-19th century. Both retain a dark patina with some scattered corrosion. One features a safety. Toggle-headed harpoons were developed first by Lewis Temple (1800-1854) in 1848. temple was born as a slave in Virginia and who earned his freedom and worked as a blacksmith in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the whaling capital of the world.
