JAPANESE TYPE 96 LIGHT MACHINE GUN (FULLY TRANSFERABLE).Charles Erb (Kokura)JAP TYPE 9660266.5 JAPMODERN; NFACal. 6.5 Japanese. 21-3/4" bbl. Markings indicate this gun was manufactured by Kokura in Dec 1939, however left side of receiver marked Block 3 of current registration form indicates "WWII Japanese / Charles N. Erb, Jr. / Frederickstown, PA" Bbl is SN 8182, stepped type, manufactured in Dec 1939. Bolt, operating piston, bbl latch, buffer all are SN 8182, albeit bbl latch appears to be a forced match. This lot includes 1 orig 30 rnd magazine SN 46291 and 1 orig 2.5X scope, manufactured by Fuji. Charging handle sliding cover is not present. Bi-pod has sustained a bullet strike to the right leg. Neither of these affect the functionality. Bolt moves freely under good spring tension within the receiver. This weapon appears fully functional. This is a National Firearms Act item and requires BATF approval prior to transfer. This item is fully transferable on an ATF Form 3 or Form 4. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very good to extremely fine with over 80% smooth blue finish, taking on an even brown patina with more blue remaining on the cyl. Carrying handle in very good condition with a few small chips. Buttstock & handgrip also have some dings with some more pronounced bruising to the hand grip. Bore is very good with shiny lands. Wooden handle slightly loose on its shaft. Magazine has a couple of dents and is somewhat misshapen at the top left, but spring tension is good and appears fully functional. Scope optics are cloudy and unclear, and scope binds when seated on gun. The Japanese Type 96 machine gun was much liked by Japanese forces due to its light weight, adjustable gas port and reliability. This specimen with its fairly early date could have been anywhere and without doubt saw combat action, as evidenced by the bullet strike. A very nice WWII collectible. 50455-7 JWK28 (8,000-12,000)
