Last third 19th century, New York. This well carved figure, rendered with headband, with green robe over left shoulder and side, red-feathered tunic beneath. The figure's right arm extended, offering a bundle of cigars. The Indian with breeches and stylized fringe on the exterior of each leg, right leg slightly extended. Mounted on its original rectangular base, raised on iron wheels. SIZE: 65" h (figure only), 75" h (overall). PROVENANCE: Arthur Bernd, Danbury, Connecticut Tobacconist, by descent to its current owner. This figure was illustrated on a 1/2 page in color in National Geographic Magazine, September 1931, vol. LX, number three, illustration VII. A copy of this publication accompanies the lot CONDITION: Multiple layers of old paint of the period. The right arm supported by a later iron bracket. Proper left foot with restored and replaced front of foot. Fine color and patina with normal and expected in-use wear and soiling.
