FINE HANGING IRON TWO SIDED TAVERN TRADE SIGN.Late 18th/early 19th century, England. The sheet iron sign, mounted within an iron frame, suspended from an iron rod with arrow finial terminals. One side wonderfully decorated, depicting a bearded jester wearing jester's cap with pendant tassel. In profile with exaggerated pointed nose and goatee, framed within a stylized foliate spray in shades of blue and gold mounted above a memorial shield, flanked by fanciful rearing stag and antelope framing the crest above the banner "SIBI CONSTANT" (translation "consistent"). Above the tavern name "WALPOLE ARMS" at the base of the sign. The whole beautifully rendered and in vibrant colors on a pale blue ground within a deep indigo lined border. The reverse in white lettering: "THE / WALPOLE / ARMS / BULLARDS / FINE ALES / FULL LICENSED" on a black ground within a pale blue lined border. Rearing animals each with collar joined to chain anchored to weights flanking the banner. The painted side bearing the armorial of Robert Walpole (1676-1745), 1st Earl of Orford and the [i]de facto[/i] first Prime Minister of Great Britain. SIZE: Overall: 38" h. 36" h x 30" w. CONDITION: Structurally very good, original condition, with the exception of one arrow finial which has been re-attached to hanging rod. The painted side with dry and crusty surface resulting from exposure to the elements over time. Painted surfaces old, if not original. Colors remain vibrant. The opposing side with weathered dry and crusty surfaces, overall fading. Wording legible and with moderate loss of paint. 52788-1 HMG (1,200-1,800)
