Introduced in 1922, the Auto & Burglar sold very well, and was advertised as a "home, office, and bank protector, far superior to a revolver or pistol because it gives a good wide pattern which allows even a poor gun pointer to score hits". The gun retailed for $37.50, and the holster was an extra $4.00. The first guns were built on the Flues action superseded by the NID in 1926. They were not made after about 1934 with the institution of the National Firearms Act. This high condition early model gun has 10" barrels with matted rib marked "SMOKELESS POWDER STEEL" and "MADE IN U.S.A." on tops. Case hardened action with non-automatic safety and double triggers is marked the same as most field grade Ithaca shotguns with dog and address on sides. Except a special mark (Auto & Burglar Gun) is hand engraved between dog and address. A special stock was made accommodating deeply swept down tangs to form pistol grip which has flare at top of grip to fit web of hand. A reinforcing dowel extends up through grip. Bottom of grip has an oval checkered area and sides are checkered in point pattern with bead borders. Matching short splinter forend has spring tension release. This gun comes with a fine example of the scarce original holster which is embossed "Auto and Burglar Gun" "MADE BY" "ITHACA GUN CO" "ITHACA N. Y." on flap. Rear has stitched on belt loop. Also included is an extremely rarer penny post card postmarked 1922 advertising the Ithaca Auto Burglar gun. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, close to new, appears unfired, with only some sharp edge wear and slight silvering at fences and muzzles. Stocks are excellent. Bores are excellent. Mechanically excellent. Holster is fine, beginning to darken a bit, and has considerable crazing and some loss of top grain at hinge of flap. As fine an example of this interesting gun as one is likely to find. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 CLASSIFIED AS "ANY OTHER WEAPON". MGM 246.
