“MAN” manufactured (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Nurnberg AG) 1917 dated Maxim 08/15 machine gun has a matching receiver and top cover, but the rest is mis-matched parts. One very rare and unusual feature found on this gun is that it has an original the top cover hold-open latch, and the water fill cap retains its original wood thumb pieces. Gun comes with numerous accessories including The Devil’s Paintbrush” book signed by Dolf Goldsmith, original belt drum hanger, reproduction leather and cloth sling, heavy original “T- Gewehr” style bipod, two metal ammo cans, one with Turkish maxim brass-tabbed cloth belt with 8mm Portugese, Berdan primed non-corrosive ammunition with a few rounds Turkish ammo, and the other can with Turkish aluminum belt with a mixture of 8mm East German steel cased ammunition and 8 mm Israeli boxer primed ammunition. Also included is an original 1916 style drum box with two original WW1 German 08/15 Maxim assault drums, one of which has an original 1918 dated “Rathenow” 50 round belt steel tabbed belt inside. The consignor has tacked a laminated excerpt of a photo from, “The Devil’s Paintbrush” book by Dolf Goldsmith to the inside of the cover showing an identical specimen of this box. Also included is a on original gray painted German WW1 water can with “swing-out” spout. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original blued finish on exposed metal parts with gray repainted water jacket. Walnut stock and pistol-grip handle have been beautifully refinished. Blued parts show some scattered light pitting and the finish is both thinning and turned to a pleasing brown patina. Sling is near excellent. One ammo can is repainted. Drum box appears to retain original paint, with a couple splits in the lid, but still strong and serviceable. One drum has been repainted, but the other is a real gem with original “mustard” colored paint. Bore near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt is also near excellent. Mechanics are crisp. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 18-73
