Extra quality throughout with gilded metal components. Deluxe eagle plate with applique crossed rifles surmounted with a shield affixed to the front of the helmet. A silvered "2" is attached to the center of shield. All components are as prescribed for the model 1881. Leather adjustable sweatband, beige/white helmet lining is either a silk or satin material. Inside and on the crown of the helmet embossed in gold "Ridabock & Co/ Formerly/ Baker & McKenney/ New York". Gold helmet cord and waffles are of a high quality. Original officer grade leather-backed chin chain, crown plate, plume holder and white yak hair plume. Helmet enclosed in black japanned carrying case. CONDITION: Very good. Helmet shows minor wear and dulling to some gilded components. In the 1880's the 2nd U.S. Infantry regiment was in Washington, Oregon and Idaho Territory campaigning against the Nez Perce. In 1886, it moved to Fort Omaha, Nebraska to help fight the Sioux and was on the Pine Ridge Reservation on 29 December 1890 when the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred. From the Ray Bentley Collection.
