Black cloth-covered pressed-cork Model 1881 style body featuring nickel plated Model 1872 fittings consisting of: eagle front plate with two gilt stars mounted on the shield, cruciform base, plume holder and acanthus leaf motif side buttons. The black cloth band is trimmed with silver cords, twisted gold cords adorn the front and back, white feather plume. The interior silk crown lining backed with foam rubber, leather sweatband embossed in gold "Nelson Miles". CONDITION: The helmet exhibits wear to the exterior black wool and the interior crown lining. While the body and some of the hardware are, although not typical, from the late 19th century, we are of the opinion that the parts have been assembled and the name added post period.
