Extremely fine condition original U.S. Model 224 60mm mortar on BIG BORE registered receiver cup, complete with portable auxiliary M8 baseplate and standard M7 baseplate, bipod assembly, M67 optical sight in case, aiming stakes in canvas carrier, seven empty cardboard canisters for rounds in original M224 metal ammo can, one illumination, and one dummy practice round in cardboard canisters. The M224 mortar started to replace the older World War II mortars in U.S. inventory in the mid 1970's. It was designed to utilize both the older munitions still in inventory and also to take advantage of the newer long range munitions. It also incorporated a trigger firing feature which U.S. serviceman envied of the Japanese grenade dischargers during World War II. A nice, relatively light Company level piece of “Pocket Artillery”. From the collector and recreational standpoint, this is about as attractive a piece as one could ever hope to find. It is versatile, portable, and fires with a trigger. These almost never surface for public sale, because as soon as there is whisper that one might be available, it is sold and gone. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish fine to extremely fine attractive original smooth blue finish on tube thinning to a grey patina especially at the bipod and baseplate contact points. Bipod, baseplate, sight and other accessories extremely fine to near excellent. Optics of sight are clear. Bore is extremely fine and clean. Mechanics are crisp. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS A DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE.
