Circa 1890, this is an original stunning example that has been in a private museum for many decades. Black wool-covered pressed felt body has no splits or soft spots and all components are as prescribed for Indian Scouts. Gold gilt, die struck eagle front plate and side buttons with separately applied German silver crossed arrows to front of plate. Interior retains beautiful light tan leather sweatband with factory applied size 6 7/8 tag remaining. Attached is a period correct mixed red and white one piece worsted wool cord and waffle tassels. Original black enameled edge trim and leather chinstrap are present. Inside the sweatband are both Quartermaster Department and B.M. WHITLOCK NEW YORK Nov, 1892 contract stamps. Provenance: Dr. Frank Wagner cavalry museum collection. CONDITION: Excellent.
