Only 1,626 of this model were made by Simeon North between 1813 and 1815, only 1,000 were delivered to the Navy. This makes it rarer than the Model 1799 North & Cheney Martial pistol, as less were made. The original government contract called for 20,000 of these but due to harsh recoil and large size, this was revised. This contract is also important because it was the first time that a gun maker offered a product with interchangeable parts. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped "P/US" on left side of breech. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail, brass pan, and reinforced cock, center of lockplate stamped "S. NORTH/U./eagle/S./MIDDLN. CON." Standard Model 1813 steel furniture. Walnut halfstock with Wickham band and wooden ramrod with steel cleaning rod tip. Left side of stock shows a hole for the belthook, which is now absent and a wooden plug fills the hole. CONDITION: Spotted brown patina on barrel and furniture with some minor freckling and light pitting, markings excellent. Touchole has been rebushed or reconverted, lock retains a dark brown freckled patina with some wear to "S. NORTH" marking. Appears to be a very good professional reconversion with proper parts. Stock with loss above pommel cap on left side and a small chip missing along top of sideplate, edges are worn. This is a fine example of a very scarce and early American martial pistol. DMG
