For another identical example, see number 118 on pages 246-247 in "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitter. This 2nd Model has two variations that only pistols of this date have. They have a thicker and straighter grip, but the most noticeable difference int he lock marking. "RICHMOND" is stamped in block letters in a horizontal curve in the center of the lockplate and the date 1815 stamped vertically at the tail. This pistol has assembly number 44 on the left side of the barrel at the breech, on all of the brass mounts, and on the stock behind the sideplate. Virginia Manufactory issued only one pistol to each trooper, unlike the pairs issued with Harper's Ferry pistols. Armory records show only 366 pistols were made in 1815, making this variation as rare as the wooden ramrod variation. CONDITION: Barrel retains a grey patina with scattered dark spotting and light freckling. Lock retains a grey patina with very good markings. Pistol appears to be in its original flintlock configuration. Cock is a replacement. Brass furniture retains a mustard patina and shows some scattered marks from use. Stock is very good with some wear and scattered marks, and two tiny repairs around the lock. A very good and scarce Southern pistol. DMG
