Of standard configuration throughout, this is a far better than average example of this large and handsome Martial pistol. The barrel with deeply struck "VP" over eagle dated 1855. The lock struck "US SPRINGFIELD" dated 1856. Federal eagle adorns the Maynard tape primer cover, two-leaf rear sight, walnut stock with very legible cartouche "JS" for James Stillman. Original buttstock properly numbered "4" on yoke. CONDITION: Barrel is bright polished metal with some minor pitting near bolster, lock is very crisp with good markings, mostly bright metal, brass mounts with good patina, leaf rear sight with some original finish, stock of pistol is extraordinary with nearly perfect cartouche and considerable raised grain, only a few minor marks. Buttstock with patinated brass mounts, buttplate properly struck "US", wood with some raised grain, few minor marks and insignificant ancient chip behind yoke. Action functions like new. Rifled bore is good. A fine specimen of this attractive and large Martial pistol. MZ
