One of the rarest War of 1812 period pistols we have ever offered, these pistols closely follow the 1811 pattern so closely that the owner, Mr. Sadler, was able to interchange parts with his four other model 1811 North pistols. These pistols are thought to be produced for American privateers as the half-round, half-octagonal barrels are stamped Royal Exchange London with standard British proofs on left flat. The maker of the barrels is undoubtedly Bennett, who worked at the Royal Exchange at the address of "At the Cross Daggers, No. 67 Threadneedle Street opposite the North Gate of ye Royal Exchange." These pistols are subject of a number of articles, including the May 2003 issue of the Monthly Bugle, page 3, as well as prominently featured in a lavishly color illustrated article in the Man At Arms December 2005, pages 28, 29, and 44, entitled "Privateer Pistols by Simeon North," Robert A. Sadler III. The Model 1811 style locks are unmarked, however one pistol has an "O" stamped on the screws and frizzen, while the other has a "V" stamped in the same places as the "O" on its mate. CONDITION: Exemplary, with only minor wear to the brass barrels and a few very minor marks. Locks appear to have some original polish remaining. All small parts appear to be original. The walnut full stocks with what appears to be much original varnish finish and only extremely minor marks. Brass mounts are nearly identical to the Model 1811 and in crisp condition throughout. Action on one pistol is perfect and crisp; the other will not hold on full cock. One ramrod of oak, possibly the original, the other a period (?) replacement. Bores are very good, showing little if any use. Both are original flint. The use of brass barrels likely from a few years prior to the War of 1812 makes perfect sense, as these would have been made for a privateer in the Atlantic or Caribbean. With their extensive publication history and extremely handsome appearance, these pistols should appeal to any collector of US marshal flintlocks or War of 1812 firearms. Complete with extensive documentation. MZ
