When Henry Deringer came out with his infamous pocket pistol, many companies jumped on the bandwagon and made copies. This is one such gun made by E. Schmidt & Co. of Houston, Texas. Well marked on the top of the barrel "E. SCHMIDT & CO. HOUSTON.". Made just prior to the Civil War, undoubtedly some of these guns were carried by Texans while in Confederate service. Single gold band at muzzle, double gold bands at breech end of barrel. German silver mounted. A very close copy of the Philadelphia guns made by Deringer. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina overall with some minor rust and very light pitting. Markings are sharp and clear. Wood has some light dings and handling marks with wear to the checkering. Good mechanical function. GR
