Henry Young worked with his brother, John, in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and later in Luzerne County. Full length rifled octagon barrel with front dovetailed brass sight and small rear sight centered on the block. Flat, engraved lockplate stamped "R / ASHMORE / WARRANTED". The brass furniture includes a Buck County style patchbox with hinge on bottom, lid is inscribed "Henry Young". The brass sideplate is engraved with a chicken eagle. There is a silver, engraved, eight pointed star inlaid above the cheekpiece and a small silver oval wrist escutcheon inscribed "CR". The full length stock is of mostly plain maple of later Lehigh County form. There is a molded cheekpiece on the left side. Complete with period, slightly long ramrod. CONDITION: The barrel retains a dark, heavy brown patina with some corrosion and breech; tang screw replaced. Lock retains a brown patina and has been reconverted to the flintlock configuration. The brass furniture shows some wear including to the ramrod entry ferrule, which is worn through in one area. The patchbox lid also shows significant wear. The silver shows some wear and retains a dark patina. The stock retains much of its original dark patina with some areas lighter from carrying and wear. A very interesting rifle from the first quarter of the 19th century. It is possible that the patchbox and some of the hardware were recycled from and earlier rifle. DMG
