This gun features the very desirable brass barrel bands. Originally made as a smooth bore, a small percentage of these were rifled and sighted. This gun has the correct block style rear sight. Barrel tang marking of "S.C." which is only found on a small portion of production. There is no evidence of this gun ever having had a date. “V / P” over a Palmetto Tree markings on the barrel are well stamped and clear, as is the rare marking variation “W.G&CO.” at breech of barrel on left side. Lock is smooth and gray with crisp “Palmetto Armory, S*C” around a Palmetto tree forward of lock and rear of lock marked “Columbia/ S.C. 1852”. Markings are sharp and clear. Butt plate has “SC” surcharge. Palmetto utilized Springfield 1842 inspected barrels, stamping the Palmetto tree proof over the Springfield eagle head proof, as seen on this gun. This is a very fine example of an all original Palmetto musket which is well marked. As these were made for South Carolina, many were in state arsenals at the outbreak of the Civil War and subsequently utilized by Confederate troops. The ramrod sticks out slightly past the muzzle, possible correct style replacement. PROVENANCE: The Confederate and Civil War estate collection of Fred Donaldson, Julia Auctions 2017. CONDITION: Fine overall, complete and original. Metal is smooth and gray with areas of staining and very minor pitting, a pleasing even patina throughout. Bore shows discernible rifling with apparent little use as there is little pitting at bolster. Brass bands have light mustard patina. Stock is very good with some slight age cracks along the grain and light handling marks. Fine mechanical function. GR
