Dated August 3rd, 1861 and penned in Samuel Colts own hand to his brother-in-law, John E. Jarvis. The two page correspondence is instructing Jarvis to reexamine the rifles he has agreed to purchase in Europe and to reject as many as possible to avoid paying to much for them. The letter is rather abrupt toward Jarvis as Colt expresses his disappointment in his performance in negotiating good prices for small arms. Colt was in negotiations with the US Government to manufacture new rifles of a similar design as the Springfield as well as was in contract to convert older arms to a standard caliber for general issue to US troops. This letter is given a full page in the Wilson Sutherland book "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" and is featured on page 204. PROVENANCE: Robert Q. Sutherland Collection, Raymond Bentley Collection. CONDITION: Very fine and quite legible. The letter is displayed in dual glass frame and is visible from front and rear. Very old folds are evident on letters with no tearing or material loss evident. Frame is good with minor scuffing to corners. TDW
