Very interesting, possible Civil War period modified Colt Model 1855 revolving shotgun. Pictured on the cover of April 1975 edition of 'The Gun Report'. Most interesting article with much conjecture on the origin and construction of this massive, now handgun. In this writer's opinion the beast was constructed from a 10 gauge (.75 caliber) Colt Model 1855 revolving shotgun. Possibly intended for battle use in the Civil War? In any event a very ingenious and effective weapon. Overall length is 20-5/8" and weighs approximately 6 lbs 8 oz. The grip is walnut, well constructed and most likely from the original Colt stock. The original tang was heated and bent forming the grip backstrap. Also, the trigger guard was formed to the grip using the original with a brass extension added to makeup required additional length. Numerous brass inlays on both sides of grip. Left side has large initials "P.P.", a brass oval with "GEO. K" inscribed and a brass cross with "Frank. P.P" inscribed. Bottom of grip has brass letters spelling "FOLEY." (letters "L" and "Y" missing), right grip has brass Maltese style cross with letters "J.W.B." inscribed. Evidence of a missing inlaid cross and animal like figure on right grip. A most interesting Civil War era relic. CONDITION: Good with overall pitting with dark brown patina. All percussion nipples intact. Action works well, cylinder rotates and locks when cock, hammer holds position. Patent date on cylinder flute and "Col. Colt Hartford CT. U.S.A." legible on topstrap.
