(ca 1895) 30" Dovetailed steel barrels are engraved "Boss & Co 73 St. James's Street, London." on narrow, swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs and 2001 London nitro re-proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Serial numbers are stamped on bottoms of barrels. A newly made high quality second pair of 26" chopper lump barrels are not maker marked. Flats are stamped with 2007 London nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Coin finished square backed sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers. Action is engraved in very nicely cut rose and scroll by Sumner in typical Boss pattern, with 15 rose bouquets. "BOSS'S PATENT" is on each side of action under water table and "Boss & Co" is in scrolled band on each lockplate. Serial number is in relief on blued and scroll engraved trigger guard tang. Nicely marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15" over checkered wood butt. Stock also features classic drop points, point pattern checkering and vacant gold oval. Matching splinter Boss ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in what appears to be its original oak and leather case with brass corners embossed "C. A. CALVERT" "THE ROYAL DRAGOONS". Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and has correct large paper Boss label in lid. Case contains miscellaneous cleaning implements and Boss marked bench cloth. There is no provision for new barrels in case. CONDITION: Good, as mostly refinished. Original barrels retain nearly all of a reblack, most likely done at time of re-proof over scattered pitting, lettering considerably softened. New barrels retain virtually all of their original blue. Action is cleaned to pewter grey with areas of light frosting, mostly on bottom. Engraving still clear. Top lever and trigger guard reblued, engraving somewhat soft. Stocks retain nearly all of a hand rubbed oil refinish, edges somewhat rounded, checkering re-cut, a bit haphazard on forend. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are very slightly out of time. Case leather is fair to good, with many marks and bumps, and tears on edges. Handle is good. Interior cloth is good to fine, with considerable impressions and stains from contact with gun and barrels. Partitions are good. Label is considerably soiled, rubbed, and foxed. MGM36.
